No 3d support is available from the host, on all VMware guests

So I’m running VMware Workstation 12 Player on 16.04 host. And every guest i run complains that «No 3d support is available from the host» and «Hardware graphics acceleration is not available» «Accelerate 3D graphics is checked off in the player. I have AMD RX480 8gig GPU with amd drivers

How to fix 3D Acceleration for Vmware Workstation 9?

I have recently installed Vmware workstation 9 on Ubuntu 12.04 & i have migrated my VM’s from windows to Ubuntu 12.04 . Now i am getting openGL error & it says no 3D acceleration as shown in pic below

Add the following to the .vmx file of the VM

mks.gl.allowBlacklistedDrivers = "TRUE" 

Next, install the Mesa-libtxc_dxtn1 (aka the S3 texture compression), this will probably called something be different since you are on Ubuntu and I’m using OpenSUSE 12.2.

Chances are this will crash your VM like it does to mine and only a reboot will fix it. Trying nomodeset from the boot-loader then uses the Nvidia graphics (I think — my CPU usage still rockets with glxspheres ) which then WON’T crash your VM.

FYI — I have tried this but I’m afraid 3D acceleration support with Bumblebee is totally shite on Linux.

I was having problems with VMware Workstation 9.0.0 not working after i updated the kernel to 3.5, on ubuntu 12.04. Then i uninstalled and installed version 9.0.1, and added the above line to my WinXP VMX file, and now i get full 3D support. Actually just tested Win 8, and Aero Glass is working as well. I have Intel HD 3000 VGA by the way.

I have a system76 laptop with on board Intel graphics 4000 and was getting this error. Added the line gave me a warning, but it worked. just tested directX 3D support.

+1. Works for Intel HD3000 on kubuntu 12.04 with VMWare Player 6. The mesa library package is called «libtxc-dxtn-s2tc0» on kubuntu 12.04.

Unfortunately, Intel(R) Linux* Graphics Installer for Ubuntu 12.04 is obsolete and Intel doesn’t provide download link for that release in the page anymore. I then decided to install the driver from x-updates PPA ( support.steampowered.com/… ), but the error messages persisted. I then added mks.gl.allowBlacklistedDrivers = «TRUE» to the .vmx file and it now works. 🙂

I think you’re wrong. If your virtual machines works without errors («Hardware graphics acceleration is not available», «No 3D support is available from the host»), it may be because you have activated the «mks.gl.allowBlacklistedDrivers = TRUE» option in your vmx configuration file. If so, your virtual machines will explode shortly after boot. Try a game and see.

Moreover, if you see there errors, YOU DO NOT HAVE graphics acceleration active in VMs.

Note: with Bumblebee (optirun vmware) you do not have graphics acceleration.

mks.gl.allowBlacklistedDrivers = TRUE worked for me. although, before I tried this, I found the following page on the ubuntu forums, tried that, and it didn’t work. Is it possible that both of these things together creates a fix? ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1531911

Actually, this does work for me (Running Altium Designer in a Windows 7 32-bit guest, on a 64-bit Ubuntu 13.04 host, with VMWare Player 6.0.0).

I think for those who searched for it they found it, but in case someone missed would like to share how I worked around when Workstation Pro not allow 3D acceleration for guest machines.

I’m running Intel i7, AMD HD6450, openSUSE Leap 42.3 with out from the box AMD graphic drivers, kernel 4.4.87-25-default, VMware Workstation Pro12.5.7 build-5813279.
Messages like:

«Hardware graphics acceleration is not available.

As a result, this virtual machine may experience very low graphics performance. Follow the instructions provided by your graphics card vendor or Linux distribution in order to update your computer’s OpenGL drivers.»

«No 3D support is available from the host.

The 3D features of the virtual machine will be disabled.»

After editing and adding a line mks.gl.allowBlacklistedDrivers = «TRUE» in the VM’s .vmx file. No more such a error messages pop up when starting VMs. I seen in some posts that some folks have problems with it and VMs freezing, but not in my case.

P.s. also I’m creating this post to log my personal problem solving.

Vmware linux no 3d acceleration

Ok, I’ve been going at this for some time.

Current Installation: Fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04

Video card: Nvidia Optimus GT540M

VMware: Workstation 9. (Unbuntu 12.04 is the HOST)

(Brief history: tried to get 3D support working under Workstation 8, using numerous nvidia drivers (every step you can find online), upgraded to Workstation 9 and retried all the steps. Reinstalled Ubuntu.);

Current status: Currently using Bumblebee. 3D WORKS on Ubuntu. I have glxinfo returning YES for 3D support and glxspheres working.

Since No nvidia drivers are installed, Vmware Workstation WILL NOT recognize the video card, and thus will not enable 3D support for the Windows 7 VM. — This is the problem we need to solve.

I have tried to uninstall Bumblebee and install Nvidia drivers and suffered from the 640×480 issue, with the Nvidia Settings not detecting a proper x configuration.

So the issue is currently: VMware will not recognize the video card properly since Bumblebee is installed. The 3D support will ONLY (so far) work using Bumblebee.

Let the delimma begin. This is currently a Vmware issue, although could quickly become another Ubuntu 12.04 issue if I have to go down the path of many drivers.

(Yes, I spent 9 hours trying to install every version of the Nvidia drivers everyone «suggested» with zero luck and many issues.)

Ok, here’s the guide to get vmware workstation working with nvidia acceleration.

ASSUMING: vmware workstation 9.0.1 or 8.0.5, ubuntu 12.10, optimus, working bumblebee config, x86_64 os.

If you don’t have bumblebee set up yet, there are numerous tutorials to help you. Follow them.

1. sudo apt-add-repository ppa:zhurikhin/primus

2. sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install primus primus-libs primus-libs:i386

3. Check that primus works. Try primusrun glxspheres.

4. If you don’t have vmware installed, install it now.

5. sudo chmod a+s /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/primus/libGL.so.1

6. sudo ln -s /usr/lib/nvidia-current/tls/libnvidia-tls.so.304.43 /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/

7. sudo /etc/init.d/vmware stop

sudo mv /usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmware-vmx /usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmware-vmx.real

LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/primus/libGL.so.1 exec primusrun /usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmware-vmx.real «$@»

So far, no crashes, decent performance. Of course it’s nowhere near an ideal solution, but it’s the best I’ve been able to come up with at this point, and I’m really, really happy to have hardware acceleration.

Works for me too, well done!

Any idea why we need to run vmware as root? I did set /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/primus/libGL.so.1 setuid root but it still doesn’t load when I run vmware as a user and I don’t have any relevant output on the terminal.

With primusrun and setuid binaries this is always the case, as far as I can tell. I’m not sure that setuid’ing the libGL library makes a difference. I have to play with it more. However, this does give the benefit of letting one use the intel card when wanted by not running vmware as root.

I think this may be as good as we’ll get, but I’m still thrilled to be able to use hardware acceleration with VMs at all. I’ll try to look into a non-root solution, but I don’t think the outcome looks too great, as any fix would likely involve lots of hacky stuff.

Indeed, I just spoke to amonakov. primusrun relies on LD_LIBRARY_PATH and setuid root executables don’t have access to it (for security reasons). One possible workaround suggested by amonakov would have been to simply make /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/primus/libGL.so.1 the «system-wide» libGL.so.1 by putting it in ld.so.conf (and removing the others or putting them lower priority), but then you have to use it for everything, and after testing it, VMWare complains that a bunch of glx functions are not present (vmware needs a whole bunch which are not implemented in primus), so LD_LIBRARY_PATH is required to have fallback libGL.so.1’s (nvidia’s or mesa’s).

So in short this is as good as it gets for now.

primusrun works perfectly well for me. At least I get some 3D goodness offloaded to the GFX, windows is then usable.

I’m using openSUSE 12.2, I installed primusrun from openSUSE repo and then needed to tweak the run script to add this:

LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib64/nvidia/tls/libnvidia-tls.so.310.19:/usr/lib64/primus/libGL.so.1:/usr/lib64/nvidia/libnvidia-glcore.so.310.19 exec primusrun /usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmware-vmx.real «$@»

because the locations are not same as ubuntu.
