Sometimes I want to play at work, where I use Ubuntu.
It’s quite the hassle, but once it’s working, it works just as smooth as under Windows. This is NOT played in a VM, we just use a VM to get it installed.
It took me like 6 hours of trial and error to get 1.31 working under Linux (1.30 was working on the first try). First 12 steps can be done either with a VM or via a Windows PC. (Doing a clean install of Wc3). Initially I tried to use Wine directly from the command line, but that just kept crashing the game. So I downloaded a tool called Lutris in which you can try to launch the game with various different Wine versions.
- Install Virtualbox
- Install Windows 10 Pro on a virtual machine
- Boot the VM
- In the VM menu, find «Insert virtual box guest additions CD»
- It will ask you to install that, we need this to create a shared folder.
- Create a shared folder with Virtualbox, so you can copy your Warcraft installation folder to your host Linux machine
- Download the Windows 10 version of WC3 from your battle.net account
- Install wc3
- Enter your WC3 ROC key (it won’t ask for FT key)
- Run the game inside the virtual machine and make sure the intro video’s are done (just press esc) so the next time you launch it, you won’t have the intro video (The intro video is one of the things that made it crash on Linux)
- Copy your warcraft 3 folder to clipboard, look under ‘network locations’ where you’ll find your VM shared folder and paste the warcraft folder there.
- Once copied, close your VM. You don’t need it anymore
- Install Lutris ( https://lutris.net/ )
- In Lutris, click the Lutris icon at the top left and select ‘manage runners’
- Scroll down to ‘Wine’ and click the blue icon next to it
- In the list, search for «ge-protonified-nofshack-4.9» and tick the checkbox if it’s not already downloaded. Close the runners dialogs.
- I don’t know if this step is strictly necessary, but I copied my «Warcraft III» folder to /home/frank/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Warcraft III/ to make it match the default Windows installation directory.
- Back in Lutris, click on the + sign top left and select ‘add a game’
- On the game info tab enter ‘Warcraft III’ for the name and in the runner select box, select Wine (Runs windows games)
- Then go to the tab ‘game options’
- For the executable, browse to /home/frank/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Warcraft III//x86_64/Warcraft III.exe
- For the arguments, type -graphicsapi Direct3D9
- Set working directory to your Warcraft III root folder /home/frank/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Warcraft III/
- Prefix architecture: auto
- In the runners options tab set the Wine version to ge-protonified-nofshack-4.9-x89_64 and leave the rest as it is
- Warcraft 3 will then show in your games list and you can click ‘play’ on the right.
If you want to use the custom keys file, you’re gonna have a bad time. For me it wasn’t working no matter how many times I kept deleting and copying CustomKeys.txt
I tried putting it in the following locations and nothing seemed to work:
- /home/frank/Documents/Warcraft III/CustomKeyBindings/
- /home/frank/.wine/drive_c/users/frank/Documents/Warcraft III/CustomKeyBindings/
- /home/frank/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Warcraft III/
It kept using Warcraft’s default keys. So what did the trick for me (since Linux is case sensitive) and somehow the game kept looking for Customkeys.txt rather than CustomKeys.txt. So I made the k lower case and it worked.
I’ve played a few games now and had a 100% smooth experience. I can’t promise this will work for every distribution and version, but it’s what worked for me. If you have any questions, ask in the comments or PM me, maybe I can help.
