I have a Dell 3100cn printer and according to the install instructions:
Step 1: Check the Dell’s official website for an update
Step 2: You must install the Dell 3100cn Laser Printer driver in Compatibility Mode

I’m a newbie, how do I get into «Compatibility Mode?» What exactly is it?

that’s only for windows and I doubt Dell has a linux driver.
but you may be lucky as both the Epson CX11N, CX11NF and Dell 3010cn are based on the Fuji Xerox DocuPrint c525a.

Yes, like Pat stated, Compatibility Mode is used by Windows to emulate older hardware/software to make sure no matter what type of PC you have, the program will run or install correctly. Unfortunately this will have nothing to do with Linux

Dell, as well as other printer manufacturers, usually lack basic Linux driver support. You often have to use a different driver altogether or actually purchase a printer that you confirm works with Linux (specifically the kernel that you’re using). It kinda sucks, but it’s mainly the fault of the manufacturers and not Linux.

Hmmm, that’s a real puzzle because I found those directions on a page that explains how to use the printer with Linux. Weird. Maybe they’re assuming it is a dual-boot system or something. It doesn’t make sense: http://drivers.downloadatoz.com/vendor_ . linux.html

Don’t use sites like that. Only get drivers from the official manufacturer’s site.

Setting aside that the download from there is likely laced with malware, the information on that page is generated by an automated process and is not checked by humans. Basically they send web-spiders to scrape the information off official pages, then reassemble it in forms for their own pages. Hence you get that confused mishmash of Linux and Windows information on that page.

I went with a sandie box internet explorer and it did catch 7 popups and 2 addware in less then 2 seconds, way to go

I was careful enough to go to the Dell site without using the links, thats SOP. I was just confused because they were talking about a «compatibility mode,» and I wasn’t aware of any such thing in Linux. Alas, I guess it was just another bogus site. I’m still plugging away trying to get the Linux system to talk to the printer through a print server. What a battle! I suppose, if the printer were newer, it wouldn’t be so difficult. I did get my newer model Epson to both print and scan via wireless without too much trouble, but they had fairly recent drivers, Dell, not so much.
