Yellow Dog Linux (англ. yellow dog — желтая собака) — свободная и открытая операционная система для PowerPC компьютеров.

Создана на основе CentOS как производное от Red Hat Enterprise Linux.

История

Изначально система разрабатывалась компанией Terra Soft Solutions, которая затем была куплена Fixstars Solutions [1] .

Особенности

• Поддержка архитектур Apple G4/G5, Sony PlayStation 3(после обновления до версии 3.21 поддержка прекращена), PowerStation и IBM Power Systems

Yellow Dog Linux

As Yellow Dog Linux is an PowerPC-only GNU/Linux distribution, it has to be emulated to run on a mainstream PC (i686, x86_64, or arm64), although this can be slow.

Requirements

• Basic understanding of Linux-based systems.
• Basic understanding of the command-line interface (CLI).
• QEMU.
• Yellow Dog Linux ISO image.
• A lot of time. (emulation is slow)

Instructions

The following instructions below apply to Yellow Dog Linux version 6.2.

• Download the QEMU emulator from http://www.qemu.org.
• Install the QEMU emulator (and make symbolic links to C:\Program Files\qemu manually on Microsoft Windows.)
• Download Yellow Dog Linux from http://archive.org or another website.
• Open a terminal emulator (xterm, rxvt, Konsole, CMD, or Terminal on macOS)
• Navigate to the directory where you have downloaded the Yellow Dog Linux ISO file.
• Create a virtual hard disk: qemu-img create ydl.img 45gb
• Run it in QEMU: qemu-system-ppc -cdrom yellowdoglinux.iso -hda ydl.img -m 1024 -M mac99,via=pmu -g 1024x768x16 -boot d
• In QEMU’s display you will see the yaboot prompt, click enter to proceed.
• You will see a lot of kernel messages, it’s booting up right now.
• Wait for it to load the installer.
• Select your desired language.
• Select your desired keyboard layout.
• If you haven’t installed another PowerPC-compatible operating system, it will alert that the partition table on the main hard disk could not be found. Format the virtual disk to continue.
• Configure the hard disk partitioning. The default is to remove every Linux partition and replace it with Yellow Dog Linux.
• Confirm you want to partition the hard disk.
• The network configuration is set to auto-configure with the DHCP protocol by default. Go to the next step unless you have a good reason not to use DHCP.
• Select your desired time zone.
• Create a password for the root account.
• Select the desired packages you want to install.
• Begin the installation
• Wait for installation to finish.
