IMPORTANT NOTE: You are welcome to edit this wiki, but to prevent spam we’ve turned off automatic account creation. If you aren’t already registered you need to first email webmaster @ (this domain above) to request a user account. Thanks for understanding.

This wiki and other features found on Knoppix.net are all about Knoppix. Knoppix.net is a resource for users, developers, and testers of Knoppix. The official website for Knoppix is at Klaus Knopper’s website.

Knoppix is a Free and Open Source Live Linux CD based on Debian GNU/Linux. Live Linux CD means that the computer boots and runs completely from cd. Nothing is installed on your hard drive in order for you to experience many of the Open Source software packages available. Knoppix includes recent Linux software and desktop environments, including such applications as LibreOffice, Abiword, Gimp, Konqueror, Iceweasel, Apache, PHP, MySQL and hundreds of other quality open source programs. (See «Complete list of packages included with Knoppix» for more information.)

Knoppix.net allows you to look at the FAQ’s and Documentation, participate in discussions on the forums, or just burn a copy of it and try it out! — You can download it ( CD or DVD size ISO files ) or buy it from a CD distributor, more info on the Download (or Buy) page.

The documentation found here is organized in several sections. The goal is to take you from the very beginning as you learn how to use Knoppix all the way to advanced applications of the Live Linux CD.

What this wiki is NOT: This is not the place to post your questions about Knoppix. The Knoppix forum is the proper place for asking for help from other Knoppix users. If you do post a question in the forums and get an informative response, consider enhancing the wiki by adding that information to the appropriate section (assuming it wasn’t there already).

Downloading

A handy one-stop source of information about downloading, verifying, burning and booting a Knoppix CD or DVD is this wiki’s Downloading FAQ. You may also want to review the wiki article on Bittorrent. If you do not wish to download and burn your own copy there are others who will sell you a copy of Knoppix. Buying it from our preferred supplier costs as little as $1.95 and earns us a small commission that helps pay for this site: Buy Knoppix on CD or DVD.

FAQ

There are various Frequently Asked Question pages available.

Customizing

After you have experimented with Knoppix for awhile you may want to customize it. Customizing may be as simple as using the Cheat Codes while booting the Knoppix CD. You may want to look at the Customizing FAQ or at some of the specialized Knoppix based Linux distributions.

Remastering

If customizing isn’t meeting your needs, then there’s information on how to remaster Knoppix. Yes, remastering is one of the beautiful facts of Open Source software: You can take the software and remold it to how you see fit. There is a german translation available.

Hard drive installation

The main strength of Knoppix is its ability to be run from memory as a Live Linux CD. The advantage to this is that you can take the CD with you. However, some users have worked out how to install Knoppix on a hard drive. If you have an old small hard drive, a large hard drive, or any drive other than a CD Rom drive that Knoppix was originally intended for, then you may want to look at some of these Hard drive Installation pages.

What linux is knoppix

KNOPPIX is a compilation of GNU/Linux software, run completely from CD, DVD or flash disk. It automatically detects and supports a wide range of graphics adapters, sound cards, USB devices and other peripheral devices. KNOPPIX can be used as a Linux demo, for training courses , as rescue system or as a platform for commercial software product demos. It is not necessary to install anything on fixed disk. Because of its transparent decompression, up to 2 gigabyes of executable software can be present on a CD, and up to 10GB on a single-layered DVD.

  • Knoppix reloaded — Remastering Knoppix, May 2004 (PDF, German) [screen presentation]
  • From the Attic: First KNOPPIX paper for the Annual Linux Showcase 2000 (English) [PDF]
  • Sources for the special components of the KNOPPIX-CD

Included Software

  • LXDE as the standard desktop,
  • Open Office,
  • Chromium and Firefox WWW Browser,
  • GNU Image Manipulation Program GIMP,
  • MPlayer Multimedia System,
  • Internet-access software for (W)LAN, modem, isdn, umts/gprs,
  • Tools for data rescue, network analysis and system repair.

The DVD version contains additional software packages for office productivity as well as software development and engineering (various programming languages and development environments), education and gaming. Most Knoppix Mirrors also have a list of included software called packages.txt or packages-dvd.txt .

System Requirements

  • Intel/AMD-compatible CPU (i486 and up),
  • RAM: at least 200 MB for the graphical desktop. Recommended for working with various office applications: 500MB RAM,
  • a bootable CD-ROM/DVD drive (IDE/ATAPI/SATA, Firewire, USB), or USB flash disk,
  • a standard SVGA-compatible graphics chipset,
  • PS/2 or USB Mouse.

Starting KNOPPIX

In order to start from CD, DVD or USB flash disk, adjust the boot selection menu or your computers BIOS setup in order to start from the desired device. Everything else works (almost) automatically.

In the USB flash disk variant, it is possible to store your own settings and additionally installed software permanently via «overlay», so that the system behaves just like a «real harddisk» installation.

New: For computers that cannot start directly from USB, there is a «boot only» CD-variant available, which can be used together with a previously created Knoppix USB flash drive. Using this boot CD, the system starts from CD drive first, and then switches and continues to run on the USB flash drive.

Getting KNOPPIX

You can order the newest beta versions of KNOPPIX from various independent vendors and have them sent to you by mail.

Most of the institutions listed in the KNOPPIX Mirror List have good connections to the German research networks (this is particularly useful for students and educators). They have graciously agreed to set up limited hosting areas for downloading the KNOPPIX ISO images.

KNOPPIX Bugtracking, Forums and Offers

An english forum can be found at the KNOPPIX contrib site http://www.knoppix.net/.

Developers and people interested in technical discussions can subscribe to the Knoppix developers’ list at debian-knoppix at lists.debian.org.

Of course, it is favourable that beta testers will contribute feedback and bug reports. Detailed information is helpful, especially for problems with graphics cards, sound cards and general hardware detection, so that the hardware in question can be supported by the next release of KNOPPIX.

Adaptations or modifications by KNOPPER.NET of the software packaging / base distribution / system layout for companies (for example) who would like to create a product evaluation or installation CD are not free, of course. Instead, these are priced according to a negotiated contract (go to the contact form for a quote).

What license does the KNOPPIX-CD or DVD use?

If not otherwise specified, the software on the CD falls under the GNU GENERAL PUBLIC LICENSE. Similar to other Open Source licenses, this means that you can copy, modify, redistribute and even resell the CD without restrictions, as long as the recipient receives the same license. The source code of the standard packages on the CD are available from their respective original providers (for example on the FTP servers at Debian). Special components such as the KNOPPIX kernel or the automatic hardware detection source code can be downloaded from http://www.knopper.net/download/knoppix/ if not already available in the /usr/src directory on the CD. Individual packages, as specified by the GPL, may fall under another license (for example Firefox). If in doubt, the licenses can be found in the help sections or the DEB-database (dpkg -p package-name) of each software package.

I have a question about KNOPPIX.

Some of the most frequent questions with answers have been assembled in the KNOPPIX-FAQ. There are some tips and tricks for the boot-command line listed in the KNOPPIX-Cheatcodes (especially for problematic hardware, expert mode, etc.), though this is meant for more advanced users. In the KNOPPIX-Forums at Knoppix.Net (mostly in english language), there are a lot of useful tips and tricks, workarounds for problematic hardware and discussions about current and future features of KNOPPIX.

I like KNOPPIX, can I contribute or donate something to the project?

A list of KNOPPIX-related projects and derivates, as well as forums and newsgroups can be found in the KNOPPIX link list.

What linux is knoppix

Soon the European Parliament and the Council of Ministers will again decide about the legalisation and adoption of so-called «software patents» in Europe, which are already used by large companies in other countries to put competitors out of business. This can lead to the termination of many software projects such as KNOPPIX, at least within Europe, because the holders of the over 30,000 already granted «software patents» (currently without a legal foundation) can claim exclusive rights and collect license fees for trivial things like «progress bars», «mouseclicks on online order forms», «scrolling within a window» and similar. That way, software developers will have to pay the «software-patentholders» for using these features, even in their own, completely self-developed applications, which can completely stall the development of innovative software for small and medium companies. Apart from this, the expense for patent inquiries and legal assistence is high, for even trying to find out if the self-developed software is possibly violating «software-patents», if you want to continue to market your software. Contrary to real patents, «software-patents» are, in the draft proposed by the commission, monopolization of business ideas and methods, even without any tangible technical implementation.

What is KNOPPIX ® ?

KNOPPIX is a bootable CD with a collection of GNU/Linux software, automatic hardware detection, and support for many graphics cards, sound cards, SCSI and USB devices and other peripherals. KNOPPIX can be used as a Linux demo, educational CD, rescue system, or adapted and used as a platform for commercial software product demos. It is not necessary to install anything on a hard disk. Due to on-the-fly decompression, the CD can have up to 2 GB of executable software installed on it.
