1. Dial-UP Connection

A dial-up connection is a broadband connection that uses a modem to establish data connections over the public switched telephone network (PSTN).

In order to use a dial-up modem, the user must dial a telephone number and connect to the Internet Service Provider (ISP) through a telephone line, through the PSTN.

Dial-up modems are slower than high-speed modems and are often limited in the connection speeds they support.

In addition to the speed issue, dial-up modems are also unable to use certain types of high-speed connection services, such as cable and DSL.

For example, a user wishing to connect to a cable modem will need to use a cable-to-dial-up adapter to accomplish this.

The user must also be able to connect to a telephone line and have a computer compatible with using a dial-up modem.

2. Leased Line

A leased line is a high-speed internet connection between two locations. The service involves renting a dedicated cable from the telco to connect two offices or branches together, enabling users to transfer large volumes of data and giving a consistent connection to the internet.

A single channel leased line offers speeds of up to 10Mb/s, while a double channel leased line can provide up to 40Mb/s.

In comparison to a leased line, a T1 line is only 1.5Mb/s and a T3 line is 45Mb/s.

Leased lines offer the same functionality as a dedicated line, but at a fraction of the cost and with added flexibility. A leased-line is a telephone line that is dedicated to a particular business.

Instead of paying for a full, physical phone line, you only pay a monthly bill based on usage, which makes leased lines much cheaper than physical lines.

3. ISDN (Integrated Service Digital Network)

ISDN was a form of digital telephone and data networking that was used in North America and Europe.

It was introduced for commercial use in 1988 and gradually replaced the use of modems for transfers of data from storage devices, PCs, and the Internet.

ISDN was used with digital subscriber line (DSL) technology to enable faster data transmission rates over ordinary phone lines.

The common data rates in ISDN were 64 and 128 kilobit per second. This technology was superseded by the faster DSL technology, which was introduced in 1998.

The common term for ISDN and DSL is asymmetric digital subscriber line.

ISDN is a set of protocols, networks, and services that provide digital transmission of voice and data. ISDN is a service that can be connected to analog telephones, fax machines, and DSL connections.

ISDN is similar to a T1 connection, but T1 is a dedicated line that is always on. ISDN, on the other hand, is a protocol for allowing the sharing of a single phone line between analog phone calls, digital calls, and data.

4. DSL (Digital Subscriber Line)

DSL or Digital subscriber line is a technology for getting bandwidth over telephone lines.

It is very close to Broadband, with this one limitation that it can’t deliver as fast data transfer as Broadband.

Theoretically, a DSL connection can transfer data as fast as the phone line can support.

However, you need to satisfy some conditions to take full advantage of it. Firstly, the subscriber loop length should be around 500 meters (or less than the distance between the switching station and your house).

Secondly, the speed of the phone line should be greater than 2Mb. DSL speed can be increased by installing a new modem and/or a digital subscriber loop amplifier (DSLAM).

5. ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line)

Broadband Internet access was first introduced to household users in the form of ADSL, or asymmetric digital subscriber line, in the late 1990s.

As the name suggests, ADSL is an asymmetric means of providing Internet access.

The asymmetry has to do with the download and upload speeds: while the download speeds typically range from 256 kbps to 24 Mbps, the upload speeds are much lower.

With ADSL, a user will most likely see download speeds of anywhere from 1 Mbps to 12 Mbps. Upload speeds, however, will be significantly slower, rarely going above 1 Mbps.

The reason for this discrepancy is the nature of the copper lines that make up the majority of the physical infrastructure for telecommunications.

6. SDSL (Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line)

SDSL (Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line) allows faster data transfer rates than the traditional dial-up Internet services. SDSL is similar in principle to ISDN which is offered by phone companies.

However, SDSL is available to both residential and business users. SDSL offers a dedicated Internet connection for a user’s connection to the service provider.

SDSL is capable of supporting both voice and data. SDSL is only available to homes that are within a certain distance from the service provider’s equipment.

Because SDSL uses existing telephone wires, it is mostly available in areas that are already served by the phone company.

7. Cable

A cable is a collection of wires twisted together to provide a path for electrical signals. The twists reduce signal interference that might otherwise occur due to electromagnetic or other sources.

The twists also accommodate the higher frequencies used in fast data-transfer applications such as 100-base-T Ethernet.

The cables used to connect workstations together are 10BaseT and 100BaseT cables. The cables used to connect servers to concentrators, routers, and switches are 1000BaseT cables.

8. Fiber-Optic

Just like electrical wiring carries electricity from one place to another, fiber-optic cables use light waves to carry data from one place to another.

Fiber-optic cables work by transmitting light waves through glass threads that are thinner than human hair. Because of this, fiber cables have better efficiency than copper wires.

For instance, a typical copper wire used for communication purposes only carries about 30% percent of the data once it transmits 100% of the data.

However, a glass fiber that has the same length can transmit around 98% percent of the data with the same amount of loss. Apart from this, fiber cables are also able to support faster data transfer.

9. Wireless or Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi or Wireless connection is a way of connecting different devices to a network. In other words, Wi-Fi allows devices to connect to the internet wirelessly.

Wi-Fi is short for Wireless Fidelity. It is a technology that uses radio waves instead of wires to have an internet connection. Wi-Fi is short for Wireless Fidelity.

10. Broadband

A Satellite network is a communication network that uses the satellite system rather than cables. The satellite network is used in a situation where the cable network is not possible and can handle the high traffic volume.

The satellite network is more expensive than the cable network because it uses the satellites in orbit to send data and the satellite is not owned by the company.

The satellite consists of a satellite dish, a receiver, and a transmitter to communicate with the satellite.

The cellular network is a type of network that covers a large geographical area and provides coverage over the entire region with a small number of base stations.

This is one of the most popular networks used today and is highly reliable. Cellular networks are used for mobile phone services and are usually very expensive.
