New Around Here

I have a AC66U router with the latest Asuswrt-Merlin firmware installed on it. I have access to another wireless router connected to the internet. I would like to use this router’s wifi as the WAN connection on my AC66U.

The end result I would like is for there to be a separate internal LAN network on the AC66U, not connected to the other router. Internet access would pass through the other router, similar to wireless bridging.

Basically, I’d like to have wireless bridging, but with each router having separate LANs and my AC66U having all of the usual config options (e.g. passthrough).

How would I go about setting something like this up?

I hope this is clear enough, let me know if I can clarify some areas.

I think what you are asking is if Asus routers can be configured in WISP (wireless Internet service provider) mode. There was an article on WISP in PCWorld about a year ago. I don’t know the answer for Asus, but have seen adverts about routers that do support it. I think that dd-wrt firmware can be configured for “repeater” (unbridged), aka WISP (wireless ISP) router.
Even searching this and other Asus forums about WISP may help.

So i think it isnt possible what im looking for but here goes nothing in the hope some one has the golden tip.
I have received access to a WiFi network wich i have to use for my own devices.
I am not able to get a cabled connection.
The WiFi doesnt fully cover my part in the building where im located so i need to repeat this signal into my part.
I could use repeater mode to get my own SSID but that would send my DHCP to the main router, i would like to have my router functions in between so the other users cant access my devices.
Is there a way to have router mode and use a WiFi network as WAN?

It’s called WISP mode, but is not available on Asus routers. Travel routers can do WISP, like this one as an example. Do you really need 2 routers in AiMesh in your place? The other option is to convert your AX58U into wireless bridge (called Media Bridge in Asuswrt), connect it’s LAN port to AX86U WAN port. Or use another available unused router as wireless bridge. The owner of this Wi-Fi network can see your traffic, if you don’t encrypt it (VPN).

This is on a different location then my main house where the AX86U and AX58U are located.
I am looking to buy something that could do this and hoped for a Asus to keep everything in the same brand.
Thanks for the security suggestion, i would indeed start a site to site VPN to the AX86U and route all traffic to there and from there try to go on the internet.
Will have a look at WISP routers and see if i can find something nice that is available in Europe(preferrably my own country) in the short term.

WiFi as WAN with RT-AC68U

I have a RT-AC68U running 376.45. Now I bought a Huawei — E5786 — Mobile WiFi — LTE Hotspot http://consumer.huawei.com/en/mobile-broadband/mobile-wifi/tech-specs/e5786s-32a-en.htm. The device has no LAN port.

Is it possible to use the Huaweis WiFi as WAN in my RT-AC68U?

I use a openVPN tunnel for all my internet traffic when I´m connected with ADSL as WAN. (openVPN Client)

Will it be possible to use the openVPN tunnel when WiFi as WAN is used?

What are my possibilities? The setting Options in the E5786 are very simple. So perhaps I need some kind of «RT-AC68U as Client» mode. The Huawai has a 2,4 or 5GHz WiFi.

Perhaps it would be possible to use the 5GHz band as some kind of Bridge and the 2,4GHz WiFi for Clients?

Any help would be greatly appreciated .

Perhaps you could plug the E5786 into the router through the USB port. Then try Dual-WAN and USB 3G/4G mode.

I’m not sure that E5786 support IP over USB or detected as modem by RT-AC68U

but all of these by your hand. and start-up scripts.

1. by brctl
— remove eth2 (5GHz) from bridge br0 (be daefault br0 conatain vlan1(vlan0) eth1 eth2)
— create new bridge br1 and add to it wan(vlan1 or vlan2) and eth2

2. connect eth2 to your Huawei by use wl and wlconf command.

Thank you for your suggestion but the AC68U will not detect the E5786 and it is not on list of supported devices. http://www.asus.com/event/networks_3G4G_support/

Thank you for your answer. I will try to build these startup scripts.

Perhaps you can go a little bit more in detail or point me to some howtos or threads where I can find more advise. I´m totaly new in scripting the router.

how-to use brctl : run in console with —help

how-to connect wifi interface to AP — use google

But now I´m not sure with the WAN interface. eth0 seems to be the physikal WAN interface. But what is vlan1?

Network > Wireless

Выбираем нужную сеть и нажимаем “Join Network”
