mint 18 mate no wireless with Intel Ultimate N WiFi Link 5300
Post by Mr_I_rules » Sun Jul 03, 2016 4:27 pm
Hey all,
I installed the new mint 18 mate edition (fresh install)
My previous install was mint 17.
My wireless was working in mint 17, but with 18 it seems I can’t get it to work.
My hardware:
System: Host: hp-work Kernel: 4.4.0-28-generic x86_64 (64 bit gcc: 5.3.1) Desktop: MATE 1.14.1 (Gtk 3.18.9-1ubuntu3) Distro: Linux Mint 18 Sarah Machine: System: Hewlett-Packard (portable) product: HP EliteBook 8730w v: F.0F Mobo: Hewlett-Packard model: 30EC v: KBC Version 91.22 Bios: Hewlett-Packard v: 68PAD Ver. F.0F date: 09/14/2009 Network: Card-1: Intel 82567LM Gigabit Network Connection driver: e1000e v: 3.2.6-k port: 80e0 bus-ID: 00:19.0 IF: enp0s25 state: up speed: 1000 Mbps duplex: full mac: Card-2: Intel Ultimate N WiFi Link 5300 driver: iwlwifi bus-ID: 03:00.0 IF: wlp3s0 state: down mac:
0: phy0: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: yes
SIOCSIFFLAGS: Operation not possible due to RF-kill
I have no hardware button on my laptop to enable the wifi.
I checked the BIOS and my wifi-card is still enabled.
I tried commands as :
sudo rfkill unblock wifi; sudo rfkill unblock all
03:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Intel Corporation Ultimate N WiFi Link 5300 [8086:4236] Subsystem: Intel Corporation Ultimate N WiFi Link 5300 [8086:1011] Physical Slot: 1-1 Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 33 Memory at d8100000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=8K] Capabilities: Kernel driver in use: iwlwifi Kernel modules: iwlwifi
It seems to me that the driver is loaded.
The new mint 18 looks very nice, works very smooth, so I hope someone has an answer.

Check for a hardware switch for turning wifi on/off. Old laptops usually have one, sometimes a very tiny, almost hidden switch.
If there is none, try the relevant Fn key combination for switching wifi on.

Thx for the replies.
As stated before, I have no hardware switch nor a relevant Fn key.
I assume that my hardware is detected:
lspci -vnn gives me:
03:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Intel Corporation Ultimate N WiFi Link 5300 [8086:4236]
Subsystem: Intel Corporation Ultimate N WiFi Link 5300 [8086:1011]
Physical Slot: 1-1
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 33
Memory at d8100000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable)
Capabilities:
Kernel driver in use: iwlwifi
Kernel modules: iwlwifi
Looks like the driver iwlwifi is loaded.

0: phy0: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: yes
The «Hard blocked: yes» implies a physical kill. Documents for your HP EliteBook 8730w at http://h20565.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/publ . -c01815909, page 12, and http://h20565.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/publ . -c01827630, page 7 indicate there is a wireless button. Is yours different from these?
Regards,
Howard

Thx for the research,
I do have indeed a wireless button as documented in you hyperlinks.
This is a touch soft button which has a amber color now, meaning «all wireless of».
This button does not react when I push it.

I already have checked the BIOS.
I only have the option «Onboard WLAN — Enabled» (I can also disable it of course)

When I do following command I get:
sudo lshw -class network

So my wifi network is DISABLED.
But I don’t see a way to enable it.
No button I didn’t try
No BIOS option I missed

I had a laptop button that had been working on Linux, but after an update was stuck in the wrong position and would not change. That was on a dual-boot machine, and I worked around it by booting to Windows, setting the button to the correct condition, then booting back to Linux and it was OK. You said wireless worked on Mint 17. Can you boot to a live 17 session and change the button, then back to 18?
