Ранее мы показали (подробно), как узнать, какие версии WiFi (Windows 10) поддерживает ПК. Теперь мы расскажем, как определить версию Wi-Fi, поддерживаемую вашим смартфоном. Но перед этим ознакомьтесь с различными типами версий Wi-Fi;

5G WiFi: How to know if your smartphone supports this super fast wireless standard

Your smartphone now does all kinds of witty things including streaming Full HD or 4K video from your media player such as Kodi or Plex via your home wireless router. But for it to stream high quality video content or play intensive games, your smartphone should be capable of handling high data speeds.

Most smartphones in the market come with WiFi standard built-in. The most common is based off IEEE 802.11 b/g/n which transmits on the 2.4Ghz frequency spectrum. It’s capable of boosting speeds between 54Mbps, 450 Mbps or 600 Mbps. These speeds are dependent on the model of your router and how its configured.

But now, WiFi 802.11ac is beginning to be the norm. Devices which include wireless routers, tablets, laptops and smartphones that support this wireless standard boast of speeds close to 1 Gbps on 5GHz unlicensed frequency spectrum. This is also the reason why WiFi 802.11ac also now called WiFi 5 is also called Gigabit WiFi.

Some devices support dual-band mode which means they can switch between the old slower but longer range 2.4GHz band and the faster and newer 5GHz frequency bands. Usually you have the option of selecting which band you wish to connect to manually or you can let the device do it for yourself automatically which the default option.

To know whether your smartphone supports the faster Gigabit WiFi, check the official device specifications for your smartphone. These are usually printed on the back of the smartphone box that came with the device. Under wireless connectivity column check for symbols with 802.11ac or WiFi 5 or sometimes you will see WiFi 5G. Alternatively you can Google the phone specs of your smartphone online from websites such as this or gsmarena.com.

Lastly remember that the network you are connecting to MUST also support Gigabit WiFi too. This usually means the Access Point or the wireless router your phone is connecting to should also support Gigabit WiFi standard.

Normally most routers will simply broadcast a single SSID or WiFi name without splitting it into 2.4Ghz or 5 Ghz bands unless you own or manager the WiFi network. If you do, then you can check if your smartphone shows both bands under WiFi settings. If it doesn’t, your phone will simply use the older WiFi IEEE 802.11 b/g/n which transmits on 2.4 GHz frequency in which case speeds will also be slower.

Now in 2019 WiFi 6 or 802.11 ax is on the horizon. So far the latest iPhone 11 and Samsung Galaxy S10 are some of the smartphones supporting the next generation of WiFi. It’s a bit too early for you to want WiFi 6 on your next device but WiFi 5 is a must for today’s devices.

How to tell if your smartphone supports WiFi 6

WiFi 6 also known as IEEE 802.11 ax is now getting into more Tech products that ever before. From routers, to smartphones, smart tvs, laptops and tablets. WiFi 6 is the latest version of the wireless tech that keeps us connected without messy cables and wires. It supersedes WiFi 5 or 802.11 ac which is now the predominant standard in most WiFi-supported devices. WiFi 6 offers upto 3 times more speeds than its predecessor, better power efficiency and shines in congested areas with lots of devices.

So how can you tell if your smartphone supports WiFi 6. Frankly speaking, it’s not straight-forward. I got a OnePlus 9 which supports WiFi 6 but there’s no straight-forward way of telling that it actually does. Most ordinary people wouldn’t even bother about WiFi standards in the first place.

The easiest way to tell if your smartphone supports WiFi 6 is to simply check on its specs or specifications. You can get this from the vendor’s own product page under the specifications tab. For my phone, I could confirm from this product page.

Another option is to check on GSMArena.com. They have the largest database of smartphones online. You can simply search your model in the search box and the specs will be shown to you. For my phone, these are the specs and under WLAN, you can confirm the WiFi version that’s supported.

Should you upgrade to WiFi 6 (802.11ax)

Well most flagship smartphones today including iPhone 12, Galaxy 20/21, Pixel 5, OnePlus 9 already come with WiFi 6. So you don’t have choice in matter if you already bought those phones. However, WiFi 6 is no good if your router and other connected devices don’t support it. If your router runs on WiFi 5 (802.11ac) which is the majority of routers today, then there’s no point of choosing a smartphone purely based on its WiFi 6 support. However, having WiFi 6 phone future-proofs you so that when you finally upgrade your router, you already have a device that supports it.

We have made a Youtube tutorial of how to check if your smartphone supports WiFi 6. Watch it below;

So there you have it; how to tell if your phone supports WiFi 6, the latest WiFi standard. If you know of any other way, let us know in the comments below.

WiFi Support Overview and Market Availability

Mobile phones, tablets that have a built in wireless network access known as Wi-Fi enabled devices. Wi-Fi is a LAN (local area network) that used to transmit and receive data over distances of few hundred feet with the help of high frequency radio signals. Simply a Wi-Fi is a Wireless LAN network. This allows an electronic device like computer, Mobiles, Digital devices to transmit the data wirelessly over a network like internet to the Wireless Network Point. The Wi-Fi is based on the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) 802.11 standards.

Wi-Fi Alliance is the Organization that owns Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi was commercially available from 2000. Before that it is known as IEEE 802.11b Direct Sequence. The Interbrand Corporation named and created the Wi-Fi logo. Simply Wi-Fi is wireless Fidelity. A Wi-Fi-enabled device can be able to connect to the Internet within certain range of a wireless network. The device has to be configured with the proper permission.

Benefits and Security: Wi-Fi also connects places that normally don’t have network access, such as kitchens and gardens without any need for the cables. In an earlier stage the Wi-Fi is less secure than wired connections because an intruder can easily hack the network. Unencrypted internet access can easily be detected by intruders. So Wi-Fi has adopted various encryption technologies like WPA, WPA2.

Wi-Fi Hotspot: Wi-Fi hotspot offers Internet access over a wireless local area network through the use of a router connected to a link to an Internet service provider. Hotspots may be found in coffee shops and various other public establishments in many developed urban areas throughout the world. A Wi-Fi hotspot is a wireless access point that provides Internet access to network devices in public locations such as downtown centers, cafes, airports and hotels. Businesses and schools are increasingly using Wi-Fi hotspots for their internal networks.

Wi-Fi Direct: Wi-Fi Direct enables devices to connect and access network without need of Wi-Fi network. Only one of the Wi-Fi devices needs to be accessed with Wi-Fi Direct to establish connection. Wi-Fi Direct device will signal to other devices in the area that can make a connection. The device can receive an invitation to connect or send a request to connect to another Wi-Fi Direct device. When two or more Wi-Fi Direct-certified devices connect directly, they have formed a Wi-Fi Direct Group, using Wi-Fi Protected Setup™ and the latest Wi-Fi security.
